Yesterday, TheQuarterbin gave you guys a sneak preview of WITCHBLADE #118, which hits stores tomorrow. TOP COW also sent along an advance copy of the newest issue in the long-running series. Hit the jump to read my thoughts.

WITCHBLADE #118
Writer: Ron Marz
Artist: Stjepan Sejic
Cover Artist: Stjepan Sejic

As I’ve mentioned before, I read WITCHBLADE sporadically when I was younger, probably around middle-school age. However, it’s been at least ten years since I have been acquainted with Sara Pezzini and her supernatural Witchblade. After reading TOP COW‘s BROKEN TRINITY preview on Free Comic Book Day, I was interested in diving back into that universe. Consider WITCHBLADE #118 my re-initiation.

At the TOP COW panel last weekend, Ron Marz stated that he wanted to make WITCHBLADE accessible to new readers as well as being faithful to longtime fans. I was skeptical that I would be able to jump in at #118 and be able to get into the story, but Marz pulled it off. He knows how to say something without having to spell it out word-for-word for the audience, which is sometimes tough to pull off as a writer. Though there were a few confusing moments for me (made better with a little help from my friend Wikipedia), Marz largely delivered on his promise to make WITCHBLADE enjoyable for new readers. He pulled me into the story from the very start.

Let’s not forget the artwork of Stjepan Sejic, which is wonderful. As I was reading #118, I just kept noticing what a unique look the comic has. Fully painted artwork is not easy to deliver in the comic book world, but the time and effort spent definitely paid off in the end. Sejic did not sacrifice detail or precision in order to give us his artistic vision. In an industry like this where everything has already been done a hundred times, it’s always nice to see something new. Sejic and Marz make a great team.

My only problem with this issue is that the ending seemed a little easy. I’m not going to post any specifics, but it seemed like Sara managed to fix things too quickly. If it was that simple, why was there ever a struggle in the first place? That being said, I still enjoyed the way things were wrapped up, as well as the intriguing teaser for what’s to come.

Stay tuned for more from TOP COW, and don’t forget that their big summer crossover, BROKEN TRINITY, starts next month. TheQuarterbin will be bringing you more news, previews, and reviews from the publisher, so you’re gonna want to stick around. Look for WITCHBLADE #118 at your Local Comic Shop this week.
