Preview/Review: Broken Trinity #3

Posted by Sarah LeBoeuf On November - 10 - 2008

Broken Trinity was supposed to be Top Cow’s big summer series. Well, it’s now November, and the third and final issue is (finally) about to ship. We could get mad at Top Cow for the delay, but instead you should hit the jump to get a sneak peek at the issue, and read our thoughts about how Top Cow’s biggest storyline of the year gets wrapped up.

Broken Trinity #3
Writer: Ron Marz
Artists: Stjepan Sejic, Phil Hester
Cover Artists: Stjepan Sejic, Dale Keown

It has been a completely crazy year for everyone in the Top Cow universe. Jackie Estacado has lost touch with his Darkness powers, and as a result has displayed a vulnerability that no one, himself included, would have expected. Also, because of this, the Angelus have gone on the attack, attempting to destroy Jackie during his time of weakness. Meanwhile, Sara Pezzini, longtime bearer of the Witchblade, has been dealing with new motherhood and sharing the Witchblade. As if that wasn’t enough, some new powers within the universe have been awakened, powers that are connected to the Witchblade, the Darkness, and the Angelus in mysterious ways. How are all of these different forces going to live peacefully amongst one another?

They’re not, as we saw at the end of Broken Trinity #2, and it’s time for them to go to war. With New York City as the battleground, all of these forces have come together, as a result of fate, duty, or just plain old bad luck. Broken Trinity #3 reveals just how the battle plays out, and as Top Cow has been saying for months, it’s going to end very badly for some.

I’m going to purposefully stay light on specifics here, because I really don’t want to ruin anything about this explosive issue. Let’s just say that it was worth the wait. The story was wonderfully written by Ron Marz, who has been doing an excellent job with these characters, so it’s really no surprise. Marz and Stjepan Sejic could not have made a much better team for this; Sejic has really established himself as a wonderful artist and a true asset to the Top Cow universe, and this issue is no exception.

Months and months ago, Top Cow promised a series that would have deep implications that would change the entire Top Cow universe, as well as serious consequences that could not be reversed or undone. Well, they have certainly delivered. I’m now curious to read the immediate ramifications of the events of Broken Trinity, to see its surviving inhabitants are affected. It may have been a few months late, but that shouldn’t stop you from picking up this conclusion when it hits comic shops on Wednesday.
