From the Panel to the Screen: Comic Book Movies Nab Combined 13 Oscar Noms

The Academy Award nominations were announced this morning, and reminded us all what a good year for comic-based movies 2008 was. There were a whopping 13 nominations split between four films, several of which are up against each other. As you probably expected, The Dark Knight led the pack with 8 nominations, followed by Iron Man and Wanted with two apiece; Hellboy II trailed with a single nom, but hey, it’s better than none. Hit the jump for the full list of comic movie nominations.

Okay, discussion time. I know some people think that technical nominations “don’t count” and therefore aren’t a big deal, but I think the cinematographers, makeup artists, sound editors, and other film industry workers would probably say otherwise. That being said, I would have liked to see Dark Knight get a few more noms, maybe for Directing, Adapted Screenplay, or even Motion Picture of the Year. It also would have been nice to see Hellboy II get some nominations for visual work (besides Makeup), because that movie looked freaking gorgeous.
You can read the full list of nominees here. What you think of the nominees? And does Heath Ledger have a shot at winning Best Supporting Actor?

I don’t know if Dark Knight should’ve gotten a nom for Best Pic… it was good, but not that good. I’m glad to see that each of the comic related films that deserved a nom got at least one, and hopefully the trend will continue next year.

You’re probably right about Best Pic. To be fair, I didn’t see a whole lot of movies last year, and haven’t seen any of the Best Picture noms. It was just exciting to see that a Batman movie might be in contention.
