Heath Ledger Wins Academy Award for The Dark Knight

Posted by Sarah LeBoeuf On February - 23 - 2009

Last night, during an Academy Awards ceremony hosted by none other than Wolverine himself, Heath Ledger won a posthumous Oscar for his portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight. The award was accepted by the late actor’s parents and sister, after which there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Hit the jump for more.

(The entire award runs a bit long, so skip ahead to the 5:20 mark to check out Heath’s presentation and win.)

It may not be a surprise to many people that Heath Ledger won last night, but it was still a great moment for comic book fans everywhere. Ledger’s performance in The Dark Knight was nothing short of phenomenal, and he certainly deserved it. Still, it seems so impossible: someone winning an Academy Award for playing a character in a Batman movie?! Madness.

It should be noted that The Dark Knight also won a technical award for Sound Editing. You can read the full list of winners and nominees here. What did you think of Heath’s win?
