What to Watch for Wednesday
For comics shipping 03.25.09 or The Week Wanted Was Relevant Again. Sort Of. Every week I’ll check Diamond’s shipping list to see what you absolutely, positively, no doubt about it need to spend all your hard earned cash on at the Local Comic Shop.
AVATAR PRESS
Crossed #4
Jacen Burrows and Garth Ennis have managed to create the first must read adult horror comic since the EC classics of yesterday, and even though it pushes the limits of many people’s taste, the book must be sought out each and every time it arrives at your LCS. How long can you maintain your sanity when the moral compass of the world has been flipped upside down save for a handful of survivors? Find out this week for $3.99.
BOOM! STUDIOS
The Incredibles #1
Mark Waid takes the reigns on the new ongoing starring Disney’s super-family. With his experience writing fantastic families, I’m sure this book is going to be a hit. Hey, come on, who doesn’t like the Incredibles? Grab it for $2.99.
DARK HORSE COMICS
The Umbrella Academy: Dallas #5
The penultimate issue of Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba’s sequel to one of the best new franchises of the last five years arrives this week. There’s been a lot of build up thus far, and with only two issues left, I’m hoping these final chapters are full of pay-offs. At the very least, I’ll get some sweet Gabriel Ba artwork out of my $2.99. Oh, also, I love the Rumor. So I may be biased.
DC COMICS
Top Ten Special #1
For the first time, we get a glimpse into what a courtroom in the Top Ten universe is like. With series vet Zander Cannon at the helm, you can bet this courtroom drama will be something along the lines of My Cousin Vinny meets Buckaroo Banzai meets Harvey Birdman meets Law and Order. Yeah, that’s totally worth $2.99.
Wonder Woman #30
“Rise of the Olympian” hits the halfway mark, and things are just heating up. Ugh, I’m sorry. That was terrible. I’m just going to move along and pretend that joke never happened. Make sure to pick this $2.99 book up.
Captain America #48
Dude, we have this conversation every month. It’s Captain America. Just buy it. $2.99.
Daredevil #117
Ed Brubaker may be leaving the book soon, but his current arc, “Return of the King,” is sure to shake the book to its core before Andy Diggle takes over. Find out just how bad things get for ol’ Hornhead for $2.99.
Immortal Iron Fist #24
The good news is this book isn’t cancelled. The bad news is that Danny and the other Immortal Weapons are still trapped in the 8th capital city. Wait, that’s actually good news for you because it’s a kick ass story. Don’t miss out on this $2.99 book. Swierczy and Travel Foreman are really knocking out of the park with this arc, and you need to witness what they’re doing first hand, not by trade-waiting.
Trade Paperback/Hardcover of the Week
American Jesus, Book One: Chosen
Around the time Wanted (the comic) hit shelves, Mark Millar had two other creator-owned projects hitting shelves, Chosen and The Unfunnies. I missed out on it then, but I intend to rectify that mistake this Wednesday. For $9.99, you’ll get the story of a 12 year-old who finds out that he is the reincarnated Jesus. And apparently it’s only the first chapter of the resurrected Lord and Savior’s return. Seriously, you’re way better off spending ten bucks on this than you are on Nic Cage in a New Hairpiece: The Movie… or whatever they’re calling it.
That’ll do it for this week. See you next time.
