Rumor: Marvel MMO Coming in 2012?

Posted by Luke Brown On March - 25 - 2009

Even though Marvel and Gazillion just partnered up, the two companies are setting dates for comic fans around the world to start requesting vacation time. The planned Marvel MMO is set to release in the year 2012, right around the time the Avengers movie hits screens. I’m not one to be a party pooper, but if this game arrives on time, monkeys will fly out of my butt. Hell, considering this quote from Marvel’s president of worldwide consumer products, Simon Phillips, I’m not so sure they even decided on what kind of game they want this to be.

“… At this moment in time we haven’t identified exactly what the end game is going to be. We’re still working on the different variations that are potentially possible.”

Um… I don’t want to sound like a Negative Nelly, but DC has just put a vague 2010-ish date on their MMO with Sony which has been in development for quite a few years already, and no offense to those guys because what they’re doing looks really sweet, but I don’t think there’s anyway that game comes out next year. The build we played at the New York Comic Con was considered pre-alpha, and the dev team told us there was still a ton of work to do. Marvel hasn’t even figured out what kind of MMO they want to make, and they’re setting an awful lofty goal of three years to get it done.

Maybe I just don’t know as much about game development as I thought I did, but I won’t be surprised when this game, that doesn’t even have a name yet, gets pushed back at least a year. Though I am really looking forward to it… as long as it’s on a console.
