What to Watch for Wednesday

For comics shipping 04.01.09 or The Week Baseball Opened Its Doors Once More. Every week I’ll check Diamond’s shipping list to see what you absolutely, positively, no doubt about it need to spend all your hard earned cash on at the Local Comic Shop.

Irredeemable #1

Mark Waid returns to the very familiar ground of the villain as the main attraction with this comic in vein of the underrated Empire. I’ll let the trailer speak for itself. $3.99.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #24

It’s been a while since we’ve seen just what Faith and Giles have been up to, but it seems that Jim Krueger and Cliff Richards are going to catch us up with the Black Ops slayer. What’s strange is the cover lists regular series artist Georges Jeanty as the interior artist for this issue, but Dark Horse’s website has Buffy comic vet, and frequent Serenity artist, Cliff Richards on art duties. Guess we’ll all find out tomorrow who’s bringing the current Dollhouse star to the printed page. $2.99 makes sure you don’t miss a beat of the action-packed Season 8.

Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam! #4

Black Adam versus Captain Marvel brought to you by Mike Kunkel. Yeah, if that’s not worth $2.50, I don’t know what is.

The Flash: Rebirth #1

Well, we’ve all been waiting for this day, haven’t we? Barry Allen’s return to the DCU during Final Crisis may have raised more eyebrows than heart-rates, but Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver are looking to do for the Flash family what they did for the Green Lantern universe, so hopefully we’ll start getting some answers as to what it all means. I trust this creative team to deliver the goods, and I’m dying to know what happens next for all the Scarlett Speedsters. A serious contender for the mini-series event of the year, don’t miss out on this $3.99 comic.

Scalped #27

Come on already, you know you need to be picking this up every time it’s out. This is just a friendly reminder that another $2.99 issue of Jason Aaron’s brilliant crime epic arrives this week.

Seaguy: The Slaves of Mickey Eye #1

Alright, I’m not going to lie. This comic is going to be abstract as hell. The first mini was really out there, but still an incredibly fun read. Hey, it’s Grant Morrison, what do you expect? Here he reteams with Cameron Stewart to continue the adventures of Seaguy and his attempt to save the world one more time. Yeah, there’s that, and a whole lot more. Seriously, your mind will be stretched to its limits trying to put it all together. Grab this $3.99 issue, and buckle up for a crazy ride.

Agents of Atlas #3

Aww shit, it’s on. It looks like while doing some running around for Norman Osborn, the Agents have caught the eye of Bucky Barnes. Yeah, I’m looking forward to this $2.99 issue a lot. Probably the book I’m most excited for this week.

Invincible Iron Man #12

Damn, just when I thought Captain America versus the Agents of Atlas was going to be the fight of the week, Matt Fraction and Salvador Larocca go ahead and drop Namor versus Iron Man on me. Well, I don’t need any other reason to buy this book. Neither do you.

Secret Warriors #3

Well Jonathan Hickman, you’ve got me. I didn’t want to get swept up in yet another new Marvel book spinning out of Secret Invasion, but somehow you and Stefano Caselli have managed (with a little help from Bendis) to create the first must read new series (I’m not counting Agents of Atlas since that was already a mini-series a few years back) of the year. Congratulations, your $2.99 book is setting the bar for all other new series that follow.

War of Kings #2

After Vulcan’s opening salvo in his battle against the Inhumans, you better believe that Black Bolt and the fam aren’t just going to stand there and do nothing. Abnett and Lanning are crafting a story that I’m sure is flying under a lot of radars right now, but by the time all the dust settles, this event is going to be remembered as one of the best stories of the year. You don’t want to miss out on one of the best stories of the year, do you? I didn’t think so. Be sure to add this $3.99 comic to your buy pile tomorrow.

No trade this time. It’s a pretty heavy week.

See you next time.
