What to Watch for Wednesday

For comics shipping 04.29.09 or The Week Weapon X Went Worldwide. Every week I’ll check Diamond’s shipping list to see what you absolutely, positively, no doubt about it need to spend all your hard earned cash on at the Local Comic Shop.

Green Lantern #40

Larfleeze, or as he has so eloquently been dubbed, Agent Orange, is certainly pissed off at the Guardians. The shitstorm leading up to the “Blackest Night” continues courtesy of Geoff Johns and Philip Tan this month, and you really aren’t going to want to miss a moment, so add this $2.99 comic to your buy pile.

Wonder Woman #31

Gail Simone and Aaron Lopresti bring us Wonder Woman versus Achilles. Don’t be a fool. Make sure the next chapter of “Rise of the Olympian” is on your stack tomorrow. Hey, come on, for $2.99 you’d be hard-pressed to find as complete a comic package as this.

Dark Avengers #4

Bendis and Deodato are really working at a level I’m not sure many other creators could reach. Sure this whole “Dark …” thing is getting stretched a bit thin, but at the end of the day, a quality book is a quality book. This my friends (despite the $3.99 price tag) is a quality book. You should be reading this every month.

Thunderbolts #131

Andy Diggle, as far as I’m concerned, you can do no wrong. Particularly when writing Thunderbolts. Guys, if you were wondering what top notch superhero writing was, look no further. Do yourself a favor by adding this $2.99 book to your buy pile.

Uncanny X-Men #509

You know, I’m not really sure exactly what’s going on right now, but that’s certainly not going to stop me from enjoying the hell out of Matt Fraction’s take on Marvel’s merry mutants. The X-Men haven’t been this fun to read in a long time, and that’s a shame. But hey, now that this $2.99 comic is back to being solid every time it hits shelves, I’ve got no complaints. If Matt and Co. manage to keep it up, this book just might become the seller it was back in the late 80s – early 90s.

Trade Paperback/Hardcover of the Week

Walking Dead

Yeah, that’s right, I just recommended an honest to goodness hardcover novel for book of the week. Many of you know Greg Rucka’s comic work (Queen and Country, Action Comics, Gotham Central, Checkmate, etc.), and I hope that means you also know of his fantastic novels starring Atticus Kodiak. This book is supposedly the last adventure of Atticus, and even though the turning of the last page of this novel means no more adventures for my favorite bodyguard/assassin/badass, I still can’t wait to read this book. Actually I’m reading it right now since it’s technically already available, but you know what I mean. Anyhow, check this book out, or the other novels in the Kodiak series, and you just might find another character you really enjoy.

That’s all for this week.

Go see X-Men Origins: Wolverine and support comic movies… and let’s hope this one turns out to be decent.
