The Darkness #78
Writer: Phil Hester
Artist: Nelson Blake II
Cover Artist: Michael Avon Oeming

While Witchblade has been action-packed of late, Top Cow’s other flagship series, The Darkness, feels like it’s been moving at a slower pace recently. Jackie’s redemption and recovery over the last few months have been a long, hard road out of hell, and this is reflected in the story. However, now things are different. He can wield the Darkness again and call upon his Darklings to do his bidding. Jackie no longer feels chained to the Sovereign and his lies, and instead wants to destroy him. The tide is turning and a new fight is beginning, but the bearer of the Darkness is more in control than he’s been in a long time.

In The Darkness #78, we see that the Sovereign is getting ready to wage war on Jackie Estacado, training a few elite soldiers to deal with him and his powers. Jackie, however, is not about to be taken out by a bunch of regular humans, and starts making his own plans about how to take on the Sovereign. Neither are quite prepared to take on the other, so the outcome should be pretty interesting.

The tone of Darkness #78 is a bit lighter and more humorous than the last few issues, mostly because the snarky, wise-cracking Darklings are back in full force. It’s been so long since I’ve seen them in their element, and lines like “Yippee-kai-yay, and all” and “Henchmen. It’s the other white meat” brought a smile to my face. They’re the perfect contrast to Jackie, who is always serious, solemn, and for lack of a better word, dark.

Now that Jackie has his powers back and he’s no longer a slave to the Sovereign, this story is about to go in a new direction. See where it’s going with The Darkness #78, which is available today in comic shops.

I agree with you, that’s the first ‘good’ The Darkness in like four or five months, I really likes it.

I hope it keeps getting better on the next issues, I was starting to miss the Darklings.

Witchblade action-packed, REALLY? I’ve stopped reading this title about one year ago because it was boring as hell but if you say it’s good again I’m going to get it.

Btw, just found ur blog googling for Henchmen. It’s the other white meat” :P

Glad you liked the review! Keep on reading. As for Witchblade, you should check out the “War of the Witchblades” issues… I’ve been digging the story. Also the art in that series is amazing.
