After two good starting issues, I was excited when Days Missing #3 showed up in my inbox. “I wonder where the Steward will be visiting this month!” I said to myself. As I have said before, one of the great things about this miniseries is that it has the freedom to go pretty much anywhere in time, which so far has made for an interesting read. This month, the story jumps to near-present day, making it hit close to home. It’s September 2008, and the world is obsessed with the Large Hadron Super Collider over in Switzerland. I remember this period well, because half the world seemed to think the machine was going to cause a black hole and destroy the planet. Scientist Kate Prosper, an American working on the Collider, has other ideas.

Dr. Prosper believes she has found a series of temporal anamolies occuring in the universe throughout time, and if she discovers the cause, the consequences for mankind could be dire. Meanwhile, a young boy is dying from cancer in a nearby hospital, and his desperate father, out of time and money, can’t understand why his country would throw billions of dollars at the Collider but won’t spend the money to send his boy to America, where he might have been able to be saved. Because of this, their paths will cross, and it will be up to the Steward to step in once again.

Though I thought I knew where this issue was going from the start, it turned out not to be as predictable as I assumed it would be, which is a credit to writer Ian Edginton. This issue also shows a different side of the Steward, and his own personal interest in humanity. Once again, I was left wondering where the Steward would go next (and incidentally, the cover for next month’s issue looks pretty awesome).

Days Missing #3 is in comic shops today, and if you haven’t yet, you should really give it a shot.
