Iron Fist Game Coming?

Posted by Luke Brown On November - 3 - 2009

Marvel has filed a trademark for Iron Fist for a possible video game. Wait, what?

You guys probably don’t know this, but I’m a huge fan of Marvel superhero Iron Fist. Admittedly, I’m not as into the classic stuff as I am the more modern revival the character has seen under the wings of Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction, Duane Swierczynski, David Aja, and Travel Foreman. Imagine my surprise when Destructoid got a scoop that Marvel had filed a trademark for the character for use in “computer game cartridges; computer game discs; computer game programs; computer game software…” Needless to say, I think today’s going to be a good day.

Now, I’m not exactly up on my trademark law, but I do know that just because a trademark was filed, doesn’t mean there’s a guarantee any Iron Fist products will ever see the light of day, or even development for that matter. The character did make an appearance in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, and was at least mildly fun to play as, but I’m not sure Danny Rand got a fair shot. First of all, the combat system for MUA2 was in no way prepared for the insane amount of moves that the current bearer of the Iron Fist uses on a regular basis. I mean, come on, there’s no way that engine was capable of displaying the “Burning Chi Thunderfoot,” and I’m not even sure binary code would be able to do “Strike of the Silkworm’s Tooth” any justice.

It may be a pretty big dream to think that a character as unrecognizable to the masses as Iron Fist would get his own game, but man would it be fun. Just imagine a game where you have to defend the Seven Capital Cities of Heaven, fighting characters like Fat Cobra or the Bride of Nine Spiders, while at the same time learning about the history of previous Iron Fists. The premise is right there. All they need is a built-from-the-ground-up combat engine, and this game is going to be fucking money. Here’s hoping it happens, and my soul won’t be crushed too horribly.
