Sony and DC Team for New Weekly Comic

DC Comics’ Source blog has revealed the company’s plans for a weekly comic book series that will take place in the upcoming DCU Online massive multiplayer online role-playing game.

According to DC editor-in-chief Dan DiDio, the comic will be written by Tony Bedard and Dan Jurgens. DC Universe: Legends is due to start by the end of this year, and will likely launch around the same time as the video game. Little else is known about the book right now. No artists have been named, but if this book follows suit with DC’s other weekly series (52, Countdown), a rotating team of both pencillers and inkers will be used to keep the book coming out on time. While the comic likely won’t be bogged down with actual comic continuity, DiDio has said this new book will be “… introducing situations that the people playing the games can interact with, and what we plan to do is line up our stories that we can feed into the backstory of those events, detailing what our heroes are doing in those events while the people in the game are interacting with them too.” I don’t know about you, but reading a comic that directly relates to a video game that I’m playing on a consistent week-to-week basis is pretty awesome.

I was already pretty hyped for the game (with a development team that includes Jim Lee, Geoff Johns, and Marv Wolfman, it’s hard not to be), but this announcement shows some really impressive initiative. Fans had been wondering ever since the game was announced whether or not they’d be taking part in classic DC storylines, or whether all the content in the game was being created from the ground up. I’m interested to see just how well the developers and comic creative team are going to be able to sync everything up. Working on a weekly comic that stands on its own is tough enough, but working on one that ties into one of the most anticipated video games of 2010 seems impossible. Hopefully everything runs smoothly, and it all comes together nicely. Either way, I’ll be getting both the game and the comic. We’ll be sure to update you as more news on this exciting announcement is released.
