What to Watch for Wednesday – 01.27.10

For comics shipping 01.27.10 or The Week Effects Were Massive. Every week I’ll check Diamond’s shipping list to see what you absolutely, positively need to spend all your hard earned cash on at the Local Comic Shop.
DC COMICS
Batman and Robin #7 – $2.99
Cameron Stewart teams with frequent collaborator Grant Morrison for the continued adventures of the Caped Crusader, and I couldn’t be more excited. I’m a huge fan of Stewart’s art, and I’m pretty sure this book is going to own. Morrison’s been doing a great job on the book to this point, and he’s just getting warmed up. Definitely make sure you pick up this issue, which happens to start a new storyline, and prepare to be blown away.
Detective Comics #861 – $2.99
Though I’m sad to see JH Williams III go, writer Greg Rucka will now be joined by another of my favorite artists, Jock, in bringing you the continued adventures of Batwoman. This month starts a new storyline where Catherine teams with Batman to investigate a string of terrible murders. Not to mention, you’re also getting a second story from Rucka and Cully Hamner, starring the Question, for the low, low price of free with every purchase. If that’s not incentive, I don’t know what is.
Green Lantern #50 – $3.99
Wow, has it really been fifty months since Geoff Johns relaunched Green Lantern with Ivan Reis to make it one of the top books on the shelves in any given month? “Blackest Night” continues, pitting Hal and the other Lanterns against the Black Lantern version of the Spectre. We’re so close to the conclusion of this incredible story, you have to be there for each and every chapter to see what happens next. Trust me, if there’s one book you truly can’t miss this week, this is it.
Northlanders #24 – $2.99
This week, we hit the halfway point of “The Plague Widow,” and just as with every other Northlanders‘ storyline to this point, I have absolutely no idea where Brian Wood is going to go next. That’s the number one reason I love this book so much. That, and the fact that it’s one of the best written, most interesting comics available today. If you’re not reading this book, you need to rectify that situation immediately.
IDW PUBLISHING
GI Joe: Cobra II #1 – $3.99
Perhaps the biggest surprise of 2009, GI Joe: Cobra managed to take one of the more ridiculous franchises, and one of the most ridiculous characters, and not only make them both cool, but put such a unique spin on GI Joe that it was impossible to ignore its brilliance. Christos Gage, Mike Costa, and Antonio Fuso return to explain what happened to undercover operative Chuckles after he was left in the hands of Cobra. Easily one of my most anticipated minis of 2010. Don’t miss it.
MARVEL COMICS
Captain America: Reborn #6 – $3.99
Finally, it’s here. The answer to how Steve Rogers came back to the Marvel Universe. If you’re like me, and want to know how it all goes down, this is a no-brainer.
Marvelous Land of Oz #3 – $3.99
As long as Eric Shanower and Skottie Young are working on this series, I’ll be buying it. I don’t know how many more stories there are to tell in this universe beyond this one, but you can bet I’ll be there for each and every chapter. This is easily one of the greatest comic adaptations of all time.
Ultimate Comics: Enemy #1 – $3.99
Brian Bendis brings us this new mini set in the Ultimate Universe where… uh… actually, I’ve got no idea what this is about other than there’s apparently a mysterious new enemy causing a ruckus in the Ultimate U. Despite the sour taste Ultimatum may have left in your mouth, I’ve got a bit more faith in this mini because it’s all in Bendis’ hands. If it’s even one-third as good as Ultimate Spider-Man, it’ll be a great read.
No trade this week. See you next time.
