This month, Jackie Estacado, bearer of the Darkness, and his gang continue to search for Sovereign statues around the world so that they can destroy them, and eventually the eternal force that resides in them. Does that sound familiar to you? That’s because this storyline has been going on for what seems like forever, with no end in sight, and it’s starting to wear on me a little.
Don’t get me wrong, I am a fan of The Darkness, and I’ve been loving the way Phil Hester writes this character. However, it’s getting to the point where I just want to see Jackie beat the Sovereign once and for all and move on. Instead, in The Darkness #85, we’re treated to the first of a two-part side story in which Jackie runs into trouble while dealing with what should have been a simple Sovereign acquisition. They’re never that easy, are they?
Luckily, keeping this months-old story fresh is new regular artist Sheldon Mitchell, who does a great job bringing Jackie to life. I never had a problem with Michael Broussard’s artwork, but this change seems to serve the series well. It’s usually a little jarring when a series gets a new artist after months or years of the same person handing a comic’s art, but Mitchell made the transition go very smoothly. Overall, I really have to say that I’m looking forward to the next issue of this two-parter side story, but I’m getting impatient for Jackie to kick the Sovereign’s ass once and for all.
The Darkness #85 from Top Cow is in comic shops now.
