Artifacts #1

Posted by Sarah LeBoeuf On July - 19 - 2010

After months of hype leading up to Top Cow’s big summer crossover event, Artifacts is almost here. Artifacts #1 will be in comic shops next week, and we’ve read the issue. Check out our review.

Artifacts #1 (of 13)

Cover B – John Tyler Christopher
Cover C – Dale Keown
Full Color        32 pages        $3.99      limited series

“Separately, 13 Artifacts guide the fate of the universe.
Together, 13 Artifacts will end the universe.”

It’s that simple concept that ties together all of the supernatural forces of the Top Cow universe, in particular the Darkness, Angelus, and Witchblade, also known as the Trinity. If the thirteenth Artifact is found and combined with the rest, everything is over, and the world will end. This is what is in danger of happening in Artifacts, though for Sara Pezzini, bearer of the Witchblade, the trouble starts much closer to home.

The first issue puts Sara in the spotlight as she attempts to figure out who, or what, has been killing local priests. As always, things are far more sinister than they originally seem, forcing her to don her Witchblade armor instead of a gun and police badge. It’s clear that she has no idea how bad things are about to get, or how deep this mystery goes. In fact, we don’t quite know yet either, but we’re definitely ready to follow it there.

I was a little disappointed when I heard that Witchblade and Angelus artist Stjepan Sejic wasn’t going to be the regular artist on Artifacts, but there was really no reason for that. Michael Broussard comes out strong and does a bang-up job on this mini-series, and if his work is this consistently good I’ll have no complaints. Writer Ron Marz does a great job as usual, carefully crafting a tale full of surprises and unforeseen consequences. He doesn’t hold back, and he doesn’t take universe-altering plot points lightly, so I can’t wait to see the reaction in the next issue to the things that were set in motion in Artifacts #1.

This is a great start to what’s sure to be a series of huge events in the Top Cow Universe. Be sure to check out Artifacts #1 when it hits comic shops next week.

[...] While this Top Cow Universe-spanning story isn’t the first mega-event in the company’s history, it certainly has the beginnings to be the best. Ron Marz and Michael Broussard team to shock the Top Cow imprint to the core over the course of the next thirteen months. A great starting point for those of you who’ve been looking to try something new. Don’t believe me? Check out our advance review. [...]
