What to Watch for Wednesday

For comics shipping 07.21.10 or The Week Scott Pilgrim and SDCC Returned. Every week I’ll check Diamond’s shipping list to see what you absolutely, positively need to spend all your hard earned cash on at the Local Comic Shop.

DC COMICS

Batman Beyond #2 – $2.99

Despite the first issue being good and not great (perhaps I was just setting the bar too high), I’m really looking forward to the rest of this mini-series. Batman Beyond was one of my favorite cartoons, and I think Terry McGinnis is one of the most interesting characters that’s yet to have his life fully explored in comics. I hope this series is successful enough to warrant more adventures of this future Batman (even though Grant Morrison has pretty much ruled out McGinnis’ chances by making Damian the Batman of the future) because the world could use a little more Batman Beyond.

DV8: Gods and Monsters #4 – $2.99

Brian Wood continues his brilliant reimagining of the DV8 characters with the fourth chapter of Gods and Monsters. Dropping a bunch of high-powered, yet mentally unstable, twenty-something kids onto a world where abilities like theirs makes them gods makes for some interesting story opportunities, and I’m curious to see just where Wood is going with the concept. This issue marks the half-way point, so there’s still time to jump on board if you happened to miss out on earlier issues.

Northlanders #30 – $2.99

Wood teams with his regular DMZ artist for this brand new storyline. It doesn’t matter what it’s about because it will be about vikings, and it will be awesome.

MARVEL COMICS

Amazing Spider-Man #638 – $3.99

This is it. The storyline that will finally explain just what happened at the conclusion of “One More Day.” Whether you want it to or not. I’m going to check it out because I’m curious just what Joe Quesada is going to do to mess up the good thing that’s been going on since the Spidey/MJ split.

ONI PRESS

Scott Pilgrim, Vol. 6: Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour – $11.99

This is the book of the week. Forget Comic Con. Forget everything. Just know that this sixth and final Scott Pilgrim story ends a six year journey with the style and grace it so deserves. Though it technically came out today, there’ll still be plenty of copies left for those of you who missed out on not just this book, but the whole Scott saga. Don’t be dissuaded by the hype behind the movie. The comic is legit.

PS- We’ll have a review up tomorrow morning for those of you still on the fence.

Trade Paperback/Hardcover of the Week

Four Eyes, Vol. 1: Forged in Flames – $9.99

Like dragons? Like depression-era alternate histories? Good. Here’s the story of Enrico, a young boy whose father dies in the line of duty. His job? Dragon handler/hunter for the city’s most popular underground sport: dragon fights. Deciding to take up his father’s line of work to provide for his desperate mother, Enrico gets himself into a bit more than he can chew. Joe Kelly does a wonderful job crafting characters and a world that are believable, and Max Fiumara’s art brings just the right amount of gloom to the story. The dragons are fierce, the emotions run high, and the finale will have you clamoring for more. This is the second best ten bucks you’ll spend this week right behind the book listed above.

That’ll do for this week. See you next time.
