Digital Comic Update – 08.06.10

Posted by Luke Brown On August - 6 - 2010

The Digital Comic Update returns to bring you the breakdown of what you should be buying on you iPad, iPhone, and PSP.

BOOM! Studios

Nothing new to report on this week’s BOOM! update. Though there are more than a few BOOM! digital comics made available on various other apps this week. It’s just a shame that you can’t find them on the actual BOOM! app yet.

Comics+/IDW/Archie

Loaded with content, this week’s Comics+ update has more than a few books worth taking a look at. I’ve never read Dodge’s Bullets, but I’m a sucker for a good detective mystery, and this graphic novel looks to be right up my alley. BOOM! books Cold Space and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? arrive this week as well, as do the fifth and sixth issues of Neil Gaiman’s and John Romita Jr’s Eternals mini-series. Sprinkle in a few kid-friendly titles like Sonic the Hedgehog and Sabrina, and you’ve got a pretty good haul.

comiXology

comiXology drops a ton of content this week, and there should be something here for just about everyone. The first three issues of Grant Morrison’s JLA (with artist Howard Porter) debut, with the first issue being made available for free. If you’ve never read this comic, this is your perfect chance. Morrison’s JLA is widely regarded as one of the best runs on the book, and if you’re a fan of any of the big hitters at DC, this is absolutely worth checking out. Morrison’s opening arc on New X-Men also makes an appearance, and just like his run on JLA, this story comes highly recommended. You’ll also find new issues of Powers, Amazing Spider-Man, and Jonah Hex on this week’s update, but the big two greatly outnumber the amount of independents you can find. Though, if you were looking for a reason to start reading more Top Cow books, the first two issues of the Angelus mini-series hit the app this week. The whole story is pretty good, and definitely worth a read if you’re looking for something a little different.

DC Comics

Despite the large haul of DC comics on the comiXology app, there isn’t very much content on the actual DC app this week. Morrison’s JLA is available here as well, as are new issues of Green Lantern, High Moon, and Planetary. The only book you absolutely must pick up this week is Kingdom Come #4 because you need to see how it all ends. You have picked up the previous three issues right? Okay, good. It’s kind of a bummer there’s so little to choose from this week, but there’s always a chance next week could be huge.

  • The Authority #6 – $0.99
  • Batman #666 – $1.99
  • Bayou #6 – #0.99
  • Bottle of Awesome #2 – $0.99
  • Deadly #1 – FREE
  • Gen 13 #26 – $1.99
  • Green Lantern #35 – $1.99
  • High Moon #6 – $0.99
  • JLA #1 – FREE
  • JLA #2-3 – $0.99 (each)
  • Jonah Hex #16 – $1.99
  • Kingdom Come #4 – $1.99
  • Origin of Martian Manhunter – FREE
  • Planetary #9 – $1.99
  • Stormwatch: PHD #18 – $0.99
  • Superman/Batman #22 – $1.99
  • Supernatural: Origins #5 – $1.99
  • Wildcats #6 – $0.99
  • The X-Files #3 – $1.99

Marvel Comics

Six issues of Thor by J. Michael Straczynski stand out as the “must buy” digital comics this week. If you’re even remotely interested in the movie that’s coming out next year, this are the comics you should be reading to get a grasp on the character. There’s also a handful of Ms. Marvel issues written by Brian Reed, and though I haven’t read them before, I’ve heard good things, and will be taking the opportunity to buy them this week. You’ll be able to find the entire “Avengers Disassembled” arc that ran in Avengers #500-503 that pretty much started the multi-year Marvel event that just finished with Siege and the Heroic Age. The story’s decent, but the real star of those comics is artist David Finch.

  • Avengers #500 – FREE
  • Avengers #501-503 – $1.99 (each)
  • Iron Man #73-82 – $1.99 (each)
  • Marvel Adventures Iron Man #7 – $1.99
  • Marvel Adventures Spider-Man #7 – $1.99
  • Ms. Marvel #1 – FREE
  • Ms. Marvel #2-5 – $1.99 (each)
  • Thor #7 – FREE
  • Thor #8-12 – $1.99 (each)
  • Ultimate X-Men #7 – FREE
  • Ultimate X-Men #8-12 – $1.99 (each)

PSP

Right off the bat I’m going to recommend the issues of Captain America and Green Lantern that are available this week. Both books are always a great read, and in my opinion, you can never go wrong with Hal Jordan or Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes. Kingdom Come also concludes on the PSP this week, and I’m sure I don’t have to tell you again how fantastic that series is. A solid helping of Disney related books round out a fairly big week on the PSP.
