Digital Comic Update – 08.13.10

Posted by Luke Brown On August - 13 - 2010

Look out, here comes the Digital Comic Update. It’s chock full of all the iPad, iPhone, and PSP comics you can handle.

BOOM! Studios

Again, nothing new on the actual BOOM! app, but there are some BOOM! comics available elsewhere this week.

Comics+/IDW/Archie

Thirty-six new books on Comics+ this week including more Red Star, which is always a good thing. I had a few scattered issues of this book when it was originally coming out in print, and I’m glad I have a chance to fill out the rest of my collection now. Unfortunately, you still can’t search for any other issues of Red Star except for the ones on sale this week, which is a shame. A handful of BOOM! books like Unthinkable and The Anchor drop, as well as Dynamite’s The Complete Dracula from John Reppion and Leah Moore (daughter of Alan Moore). The second issue of IDW’s Mystery Society is also up this week, as are two more chapters of Ed Brubaker’s and Sean Phillips’ Criminal. There’s even a digital trade of the whole Archie marries Veronica saga. A pretty good week on all accounts.

comiXology

There is literally a metric ton of Iron Man or Iron Man-starring comics available this week on the comiXology app. The final five chapters of Matt Fraction’s “The Five Nightmares” arc that opened Invincible Iron Man are worth checking out, as are the old Tales of Suspense issues. Some good JMS issues of Thor arrive this week, in addition to a few issues of the early years of Uncanny X-Men. Wolverine gets his fair share of releases this week as well, though the only issues worth checking out are the “Old Man Logan” stories. The sheer number of Iron Man books buries just about every other release this week, but aside from the odd DC issue, there really isn’t much else to talk about.

DC Comics

Very light week on the DC app this time around. Two new issues of All Star Superman stand out alongside Green Lantern #1. You’ve also got to check out Batman #667. The storyline that kicks off in this issue introduces the international Batmen of the world, and in true Grant Morrison style, will have you scratching your head until the very last page. It helps that this arc is wonderfully illustrated by JH Williams III. That’s just about it for DC this week.

  • All Star Superman #7-8 – $1.99 (each)
  • The Authority #7 – $0.99
  • Batman #667 – $1.99
  • Bayou #7 – $0.99

  • Supernatural: Origins #6 – $1.99
  • Wildcats #7 – $0.99
  • X-Files #4 – $1.99

Marvel Comics

There are some good issues of Grant Morrison’s New X-Men this week, as well as some decent, but well-drawn issues of Ultimate Fantastic Four. The real star this week would be the complete Marvels mini-series, however, every single one of the four issues is split into two parts. Marvel’s standard $1.99 price gets doubled-down, and instead of costing just a hair under eight bucks, the whole thing will run you just over $15. Now, I know that $15 for a trade paperback collection isn’t that bad. but when DC can release the complete Kingdom Come for $7.96. They’re basically the same series, and both were prestige format books when they came out over a decade ago. The real gripe I have is Marvel’s insistence on getting twice as much money for the content. I know they’re entitled to whatever price they want to charge, but these are not print comics, and Marvel has once again made the wrong decision when pricing out their digital catalog.

  • Venom: Dark Origin #1 – FREE
  • Venom: Dark Origin #2-5 – $1.99 (each)

Panelfly

This week sees a ton of Hellraiser and original Fantastic Four comics arrive on the Panelfly app. As always, I eagerly await the launch of the iPad app to better get a feel for what the Panelfly app is really like.
