Velocity #3

Top Cow’s Velocity #3 arrives just before the end of the year, and leaves you with a cliff-hanger sure to leave you shouting, “Whaaaaaaaat?!”

Written by RON MARZ

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the red-headed speedster starlet Velocity, and it’s a shame the book has been so delayed because it’s a pretty fun read. When we last left off, Velocity was tracking down her Cyberforce teammates so she could give them an antidote to the poison they’d been dosed with. She’s only got one hour to save a handful of her closest friends, and with each panel, time ticks down. In this issue, Carin tracks down Ripclaw and Cyblade, and manages to save them both, but not before she’s forced to battle with more of Dr. Erasmus Paine’s cybernetic soldiers. Like the previous two issues, Ron Marz keeps the action moving with some quick pacing, which keeps you turning pages almost as quickly as Velocity races through them. Kenneth Rocafort again shows off his incredible technical prowess, and his stylized pencils have really helped shape the look and feel of this corner of the Top Cow Universe perfectly.

The best part of this penultimate issue comes during the conclusion, and Marz sets up one hell of a low-point for Carin. You see, while in battle with one of Paine’s creations, Velocity has her head chopped clean off. With only one issue to go, I’m curious how Velocity is going to recover. It’s quite a final image on the last page as well, and Rocafort does a nice job rendering the moment in time where Velocity’s life apparently comes to a complete stand-still. Now, the issue is titled “Decoys,” and I hardly believe that Carin is really dead, but that doesn’t take any of the power away from this singular moment. It’s as big a cliffhanger I’ve seen in a solo book since Steve Rogers was shot, and I’m eagerly anticipating what happens next. I just hope we won’t have to wait another two months to find out.

  1. Lady Stardust Said,

Velocity is the only Ron Marz book from Top Cow that I’m not reading… and I really have no idea why.
