What to Watch for Wednesday

For comics shipping 08.24.11 or The Week An Era Truly Ended. Every week I’ll check Diamond’s shipping list to see what you absolutely, positively need to spend all your hard earned cash on at the Local Comic Shop.

DC COMICS

Action Comics #904 – $2.99

I can honestly say I haven’t read Action Comics frequently. I’ve dabbled here and there, but I haven’t followed the adventures of Superman for quite a while. That said, it’s still sad to see that this issue of Action Comics, Vol. 1 will be the last before the big relaunch. I was looking forward to the possibility of getting to see two comics reach issue 1000 in my lifetime. Even though DC might change their minds about the whole numbering thing in the 8 or so years it will take for 96 more issues of Action Comics to come out, I have a feeling they won’t.

Northlanders #43 – $2.99

The generations-spanning final storyline continues here. I was expecting something totally different from the first chapter, and was absolutely surprised by how it ended. My expectations for the rest of this finale are high. Shouldn’t be a problem for Brian Wood.

MARVEL COMICS

I’m also recommending Captain America and Bucky #621 ($2.99) this week, but the internet in North Carolina is terrible, and I can’t get the image of the cover to upload. Chris Samnee is a wonderful artist, and teamed with writers Ed Brubaker and Marc Andreyko this book provides a great look into the past of one of Marvel’s most interesting characters.

That’ll do for this week. Check back at the end of the month for more.
